A man today attacked Mali’s transitional President Assimi Goita with a knife as he left the Grand Mosque in the capital Bamako. There are unconfirmed reports that Goita may have been stabbed in the arm but he later said in a statement that he was doing “very well”. The twists and turns of Mali’s “coup within a coup” have been mentioned in previous newsletters and this latest incident will be seen as yet another sign of instability. The motives of the attacker are as yet unknown, according to officials.

A shocking report has suggested that India’s COVID-19 death toll could be three to five million — a staggering 10 times the official figures. “True deaths are likely to be in the several millions, not hundreds of thousands, making this arguably India’s worst human tragedy,” the Washington-based Center for Global Development said.

Singapore is in shock after a 16-year-old boy killed a 13-year-old boy at school, apparently using an axe that was found at the scene. Violent crime is extremely rare in Singapore and the murder has sparked a debate about school safety and mental health.
