Mali
They’re calling it “the coup within a coup”. Colonel Assimi Goita in August 2020 led a military coup that overthrew a democratically-elected government in Mali. A transitional civilian president and prime minister were appointed but then, last week, Goita overthrew them. Today, the West African regional body ECOWAS suspended Mali at an emergency summit in Ghana, which was attended by Goita.

Israel
Stunning news in Israel as it appears the 12-year rule of Benjamin Netanyahu is coming to an end. The leader of the Yamina party, Naftali Bennett, looks set to form a coalition with several other parties and become prime minister. Bennet - a far-right, pro-settlement, religious conservative - would represent a lurch to the right. However, he will likely find his more reactionary tendencies tempered by the other parties in the coalition.

A Frenchman, arrested in Iran last year while using a drone to take photographs in what the government said was a restricted area, is to be tried on espionage charges.
