Yemen
Here’s something you don’t read every day. Someone is building a mysterious airbase off the coast of Yemen and no country has claimed responsibility. However, on closer inspection it might not be as mysterious after all. All signs point towards the UAE.

Belarus
Several European airlines have stopped flying over Belarus following a recommendation from the European Council. The move comes after Belarus sent a fighter jet to divert a Ryanair plane flying from Greece to Lithuania in order to arrest a dissident journalist. The UK has gone further and is preventing Belarusian airlines from entering its airspace. The European Council has also recommended this action to the 27 EU-member states and has promised a new round of economic sanctions.

Several observers are saying that the measures so far are tough on Belarus. Others, though, are saying they will ultimately have little impact on President Lukashenko, particularly given the Russian support he enjoys. Let’s see.

Mali
Mali remains unstable with the leader of last year’s military coup, which overthrew a democratically-elected government, firing the transitional president and prime minister and taking power for himself again. Assimi Goita had promised elections in 2022 but, with this latest uncertainty, that could now be in doubt.
