Sudan
A story that really should be getting more attention. Days after a huge number of people were killed in fighting in one part of Sudan’s West Darfur state, the violence is reported to have spread to regional capital Geneina. BBC reported on Sunday that 168 people had been killed in Krinik, about 80 kms from the capital. An aid worker told BBC that gunfire could be heard in the city and panicked families were trying to flee.

Turkey
Osman Kavala, a prominent Turkish philanthropist and rights activist, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on charges of attempting to overthrow the government. The charges were related to anti-government protests in 2013 and a foiled coup in 2016. Rights groups say the charges are trumped up.

Lebanon
A moving piece in Al Jazeera today, interviewing families of those killed when a boat they were traveling on capsized after a confrontation with the Lebanese navy. At least six people have been confirmed dead and many are still missing. The boat was carrying Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian people trying to reach Italy to escape Lebanon’s dire economic crisis, which has forced much of the population into poverty.
