Sudan
The plot has - again - thickened in Sudan. Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok resigned today as mass protests continue over October’s military coup. Hamdok was toppled and placed under house arrest immediately after the coup, before being reinstated the following month when he signed a power-sharing deal with the military. Pro-democracy activists rejected that deal, though, insisting that only a government with no military involvement can be trusted to lead a transition to democracy.

Hong Kong
For the second time this week, we’re covering the closure of a media organization in Hong Kong. This time, online outlet Citizen News said it would stop updating its website on January 4th. The decision comes just days after Stand News closed when its offices were raided by 200 police officers and seven of its staff were arrested for sedition. Citizen becomes the third major media outlet to close in recent months.

Kenya
Famed Kenyan paleoanthropologist and conservationist Richard Leakey has died at 77, President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced. Leakey led an extraordinary life and his discoveries helped prove that humankind evolved in Africa. He also led campaigns against the ivory trade, and attempted to tackle corruption in Kenyan politics.
