Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s economic crisis is something that’s been signposted in Proximities several times recently, and things have now boiled over. Hundreds of frustrated protesters have tried to storm President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s house, prompting him to declare a state of emergency and deploy troops to the streets. A nighttime curfew has been ordered in the nation of 22 million’s Western Province, which includes the capital Colombo. The crisis, the worst since independence from Britain in 1948, has left Sri Lanka struggling to afford imports of food, fuel and medical supplies.

Somaliland
A devastating fire has torn through the main market in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. Apocalyptic images were shared on social media as the blaze destroyed hundreds of buildings in the economic heart of the city of 1.2 million people. Remarkably, it appears that nobody was killed, though 28 people were injured. "This place was the economic centre of Hargeisa and even though the firefighters did their best to contain the fire, the market is destroyed," the city's mayor Abdikarim Ahmed Moge said. Somaliland broke away from war-torn Somalia 30 years ago but its independence has not been widely recognised internationally.

Yemen
Perhaps something of a reprieve for the people of Yemen as a two-month truce has been declared between a Saudi Arabia-led military coalition and the country’s Houthi rebels. The deal came into effect today, which is the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and negotiators say it could be extended if both parties agree. The UN estimates that nearly 400,000 people have died in Yemen’s seven-year-long conflict, either on the battlefield or from starvation and disease.

I fear Sri Lanka may be a harbinger of things to come for many nations. Those on the margins will have a tough road of rising prices and diminishing supplies. Time to pull together.
