South Africa
A horrific story out of South Africa. More than 80 men have been arrested over the gang rape of eight women in a case that has outraged the country. Local reports say that a huge group of gunmen turned up at the site of a music video shoot near an abandoned mine in the town of Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg. They forced their way in before raping the women and robbing everyone on the set. Police are now testing DNA samples from the raped women to pinpoint the perpetrators from among the men. Police Minister Bheki Cele called the incident “a shame of the nation.”

Myanmar
Myanmar’s military rulers have extended a state of emergency - and thereby their mandate to rule - for an extra six months after which they promise to hold elections. The army in February last year toppled a democratically-elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi. They then brutally put down peaceful protests and the country is now in a state of low-level civil war. Most opposition leaders, including Suu Kyi, have been jailed and four pro-democracy activists were put to death last month. Unsurprisingly, most observers are doubtful a free and fair election will take place.

Brazil
A heartwarming achievement in Brazil today. Conjoined twins with fused brains were successfully separated after 33 hours of surgeries. The three-year-old boys, Bernardo and Arthur Lima, had a total of seven operations and 100 medical staff were involved. The doctor who led the operation, UK-based paediatric surgeon Noor ul Owase Jeelani, set up a charity to perform such procedures and said that it relies on donations from the public to keep going. The charity, Gemini Untwined, said that many surgeons didn’t think it would be possible to separate the Lima boys.
