Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has been toppled after days of political wrangling, becoming the first leader in Pakistani history to be voted out of office in a no-confidence motion. The seeds of Khan’s downfall were sown by his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party losing the support of its coalition partners, and by an apparent loss of support for the prime minister from the country’s powerful military.

South Sudan
South Sudan’s government and the UN have said more than 7.7 million people in the world’s youngest country are facing a food crisis. South Sudan has been beset by war, political crisis and hunger since achieving independence in 2011. “Until conflict is addressed, we will continue to see these numbers increase because what it means is that people do not have safe access to their lands to cultivate,” Adeyinka Badejo, the World Food Programme’s acting country director, said.

Mexico
A slightly odd referendum is taking place in Mexico. Voters are deciding whether or not President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who is widely popular, should see out his six-year term or bow out barely halfway into it. The plot twist is that it was Obrador who pushed for the poll. Critics have slammed the exercise as a waste of money and say the president, a perpetual campaigner, is just trying to rally his base.
