Pakistan
A major political crisis is unfolding in Pakistan after the president dissolved parliament in an attempt to stop a motion of no-confidence in Prime Minister Imran Khan. Khan, who was widely expected to lose the vote, has accused the US of being behind a conspiracy to remove him, which Washington denies. The opposition has responded with fury and says claims of a foreign plot are ludicrous. It is so far unclear where the country’s powerful military, which helped Khan to power, stands.

As mentioned in several previous newsletters, Ethiopia’s Tigray region has been cut off from the world for much of the country’s horrific 16-month war, prompting concerns of widespread hunger and deprivation. South Korea
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s powerful sister Kim Yo Jong has slammed South Korea’s defense minister for saying the South could launch pre-emptive strikes at the North if it felt Pyongyang intended to fire missiles of its own. “The senseless and scum-like guy dare mention a ‘preemptive strike’ at a nuclear state,” Kim Yo Jong said in a statement. “South Korea should discipline itself if it wants to stave off disaster.” Tensions have grown between Pyongyang and Seoul in recent weeks after the North carried out a series of missile tests. South Korea’s intelligence agencies say Kim Yo Jong is the second most powerful person in North Korea after her brother.
