Libya
Libyan security forces have stormed a sit-in protest by migrants, smashing up the site and hauling away hundreds of the protesters. The coast of the north African country has become the main transit point for people fleeing countries in Africa and the Middle East, looking for a better life in Europe. But those people often fall victim to people traffickers and are sent across the Mediterranean in rickety boats leading to thousands of drownings. Others end up being held for long periods in overcrowded detention centers where they are tortured and sexually abused.

Iran-Afghanistan
Iran has said it is not ready to recognize the Taliban as the government of neighboring Afghanistan after a delegation from the group travelled to Tehran for talks with Iranian officials. Tehran’s position since the Taliban took control of Kabul is that it will only recognize the Taliban if “an inclusive government” is formed.

Myanmar
Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s de-facto leader until she was overthrown by a military coup last February, has been sentenced to a further four years in prison. Suu Kyi had already been sentenced to two years in jail in December. The latest charges were related to breaking Covid rules and the illegal importation of walkie-talkies. Myanmar has been rocked by an insurgency and a brutal military crackdown since the coup.
