Lebanon
Two years ago today, a huge explosion tore through the port in Lebanon’s capital Beirut, destroying large parts of the city and leaving more than 200 people dead. DRC-Rwanda

Iraq
Thousands of public sector workers in Iraq were given the day off today after temperatures breached 50C (122F) in several parts of the country. Work was called off in at least 10 provinces and in the southern port of Basra, where temperatures were especially high, a four-day holiday was declared. Extreme heat is not unusual in Iraq but locals say it is getting hotter. Dust storms have also plagued the country this year.
