Israel-Palestine
Hisham Abu Hawwash, a Palestinian who had been on hunger strike in an Israeli prison for 141 days, today reached a deal with Israeli authorities after they agreed to free him next month. Abu Hawwash was protesting the fact that he had been imprisoned without charge; a practise known as “administrative detention,” which Israel regularly applies to Palestinians. Several Palestinian prisoners have recently held hunger strikes to protest their imprisonment under the policy.

Uganda
A Ugandan satirical author, jailed after criticizing President Yoweri Museveni and his influential son on social media, has been tortured in detention, according to his wife. Kakwenza Rukirabashaija was briefly brought back to his home so that police could search it and his wife, Eva Basiima, said she observed visible signs of torture.

Chile
Four beekeepers today staged an extraordinary protest in Chile, setting up 60 beehives containing 10,000 bees outside the presidential palace in the capital Santiago. The protest terrified passers-by and the four were arrested after seven police officers were stung. The beekeeping industry in Chile has been devastated by drought, and the beekeepers want the government to help push up honey prices or provide subsidies.
