Israel-Palestine
An Israeli court today convicted seven people of incitement to racism and violence after they were filmed mocking a murdered Palestinian toddler. Eighteen-month-old Ali Dawabshe was killed along with his parents when Israeli settlers firebombed their home in the occupied West Bank. Brandishing weapons, the seven danced and sang at a wedding five months later while celebrating Dawabshe’s death. One of the accused was filmed stabbing a photograph of him. They will be sentenced in October.

Myanmar
Myanmar’s former leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been found guilty of corruption and sentenced to five years in jail after a trial critics called a farce. Suu Kyi’s government was overthrown by the military last year and she has been tried and sentenced on several charges since. This latest conviction takes her total sentences to 11 years, and there are still 10 pending corruption charges against her. The 76-year-old Nobel laureate was hailed around the world as a democracy icon, but in recent years fell from grace after a brutal crackdown on the country’s Muslim Rohingya minority, which sent hundreds of thousands fleeing into neighboring Bangladesh.

Ethiopia
Ethiopia’s Tigray rebels have announced they’ve pulled out of a key region as a concession aimed at getting food aid into their home region. “A note to the international community and to all concerned: for the record, there are no Tigray Forces, literally none, left in Afar,” spokesman Getachew Reda tweeted. The Ethiopian government has imposed a blockade on the northern Tigray region, leading to famine-like conditions. A truce in the 16-month war was agreed last month but, since then, only 144 aid trucks have gotten through. The UN says 100 a day are needed.
