Israel-Palestine
Israel should be prosecuted at the International Criminal Court for war crimes committed during its assault on the besieged Gaza Strip in August, London-based rights group Amnesty International said in a new report today. Amnesty investigated several specific cases, including the killings of a four-year-old boy, a 22-year-old student drinking tea at home with her family, and a teenager visiting his mother’s grave. “Israel’s latest offensive on Gaza lasted only three days, but that was ample time to unleash fresh trauma and destruction on the besieged population,” Agnès Callamard, the group’s secretary-general, said in a statement.

Ethiopia
Maybe, just maybe, a breakthrough in Ethiopia’s bitter civil war. Negotiations between the government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) have begun in South Africa, according to the South African government. Ethiopia’s central government and the TPLF, the regional authority in the country’s Tigray region, have been at war for almost two years in a conflict that has killed thousands, forced millions from their homes, pushed hundreds of thousands to the brink of starvation and been marked by horrific sexual violence. The talks are being mediated by an African Union team led by former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Sudan
It’s remarkable how persistent Sudan’s pro-democracy protesters are. Today, they marked the first anniversary of a military coup with a series of demonstrations across the country even as the government desperately tried to prevent them. The internet was shut down, public institutions, schools, and businesses were ordered to close and security forces blocked roads. Still, thousands took to the streets in several cities. Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan seized power last year by deposing civilian leaders with whom he had agreed to share power after a previous government was toppled by street protests. At least 118 protesters have been killed over the last year.
