Israel-Palestine
More than 100 Palestinians have been killed as they waited for food aid, according to the Gaza health ministry, in what Palestinian authorities called an Israeli massacre. The Israeli military admitted it had opened fire as hundreds of hungry people surrounded trucks carrying the aid, saying some of the crowd “posed a threat” to its forces. Israel, though, described the gunfire as “limited” and said most of the dead were crushed under the trucks or killed in a stampede. Separately, the Gaza health ministry said the death toll in the strip had now passed 30,000, including 13,230 children and 8,860 women. “Life is draining out of Gaza at terrifying speed,” UN aid chief Martin Griffiths said today.

Chad
Yaya Dillo, a prominent Chadian opposition leader, has been killed in a shootout with security forces, according to officials. His killing comes a day after the government blamed him for an attack on the headquarters of the country’s national security agency in the capital N'Djamena. Dillo had denied any involvement. Chad's military leader, Mahamat Déby, a cousin of Dillo, came to power when his father was killed by rebels after three decades in power.

WFP said it had received an official request to provide powdered milk to children under seven years of age. Cuba is currently going through a severe economic downturn, which it blames on US sanctions.
