Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso’s former president, Blaise Compaore, goes back on trial this week accused of orchestrating the murder of his predecessor Thomas Sankara. Sankara, often referred to as ‘Africa’s Che Guevara,’ came to power as a charismatic 33-year-old speaking out about the legacy of colonialism and the exploitation of Africa by Western nations. He was killed in 1987 alongside 12 of his colleagues when a hit squad attacked a meeting of the ruling National Revolutionary Council. Prosecutors are seeking a 30-year sentence for Compaore, who was toppled after public protests erupted in 2014. Sankara remains an icon for many across the African continent.
