Ghana
At least 17 people have been killed and scores wounded when a truck carrying explosives crashed into a motorcycle in Ghana, sparking a huge explosion that reportedly destroyed about 500 buildings. The truck was travelling from one goldmine to another. Bodies are still being recovered and the death toll is expected to rise.

Syria
It happens every year around this time. Syrian refugees, already living in extreme hardship at refugee camps, find their lives made yet more difficult by snowfall. About 160 families in Sheikh Bilal Camp in the northwest of the country have been trapped for two days and their tent homes have begun to collapse. “When we used to live at home and would see it snowing outside, we would be so happy. We used to have a great time and play outside with the family,” Sultana al-Douhan told Al Jazeera. “But not when we’ve already fallen into this hole.”

Kenya
As I often say, it’s unusual for Proximities, but here’s some good news to cleanse your palate. Twin baby elephants have been born in Kenya. Conservation charity Save the Elephants says only about one percent of elephant births are twins, and the last such birth it recorded was back in 2006. The BBC website has several cute pictures.
