Ecuador
Another deadly prison riot in Ecuador. Prison authorities said twelve people were killed today in a grisly outbreak of violence at the Bellavista prison in Santo Domingo. The bodies were so badly dismembered that officials had initially put the death toll at 13, confused by an array of body parts. The attack is just the latest in a series of such incidents, which the government of President Guillermo Lasso has blamed on rival gangs linked to Mexican drugs cartels. Lasso in April declared a state of emergency in three provinces over spiralling gang violence but little has changed since. Last year, 316 prisoners died during pitched battles in various prisons across Ecuador.

Somalia
US forces killed two members of the Somalia armed group al-Shabab in a weekend bombing raid, according to the Pentagon’s Africa Command unit (AFRICOM). “The command’s initial assessment is that two al al-Shabab terrorists were killed in action,” AFRICOM said. “No civilians were injured or killed given the remote nature of where this engagement occurred.” Washington routinely carries out such raids in Somalia.

Turkey
Women’s groups reacted with fury today after a Turkish court ruled that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan acted lawfully when he yanked the country out of a European treaty protecting women from violence. Erdogan last year withdrew Turkey from the Council of Europe’s Istanbul Convention, which it had been a signatory of since 2011. The convention required nations pass legislation to punish domestic abuse and gender-based violence. Members of Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party argued it was inconsistent with Turkish values and encouraged divorce and homsexuality.
