DR Congo
Horrific attack in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Militia fighters raided a refugee camp housing people who were there because they were fleeing violence in the country, and killed 60. Most were hacked to death with machetes. The CODECO group, one of several militias operating in eastern Congo, are reported to be behind the attack. The region has been wracked by instability for more than two decades.

Mexico
Mexican journalist, Netzahualcóyotl Cordero García, narrowly escaped death today when his would-be-murderer’s gun failed to go off. García said the man, who confronted him outside his home in the city of Cancun, said: “I am going to kill you like a dog.” Mexico is the most dangerous country in the world for journalists outside of active war zones. Four journalists were murdered in the month of January alone.

In an interview with the BBC today, nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai spoke out on the Taliban’s failure to give girls access to secondary education, despite promises made when they swept to power. The iconic campaigner said religion was no excuse.
