Burkina Faso
Extraordinary. An attempted coup in Burkina Faso. Extraordinary because it takes us to two coups and an attempted coup just this year. The country’s supposedly interim leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, who himself came to power in a coup, said that he knew the perpetrators but that he wasn’t going to arrest them, preferring to engage in dialogue. As rumours of the coup attempt spread, supporters of Traore gathered in the capital in a show of support for him. Burkina Faso has been struggling with an Islamist insurgency for seven years in which thousands of people have been killed.

Israel-Palestine
The shooting dead of a Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank amounted to an “execution,” the Palestinian foreign ministry has said. The killing was captured on video and spread quickly on social media. In the footage, a soldier is seen dragging the man down the street in a headlock before the two begin to scuffle. The soldier then pulls out a handgun and shoots the Palestinian man four times at close range. Eight Palestinians have now been killed since Tuesday in clashes with Israeli forces. This year has been the most violent of the conflict since the second Intifada in 2005.

Ghana
A horrific new report from New York-based rights group Human Rights Watch has found that many people with mental health conditions in Ghana are being shackled to walls or kept in small cages. Despite legislation outlawing the practice, the report said it happens when people are taken to faith-based or traditional healers because of a belief mental health problems are caused by evil spirits. People living with post-traumatic stress, malnutrition, infections, nerve damage, muscular atrophy and cardiovascular problems have all fallen victim. In response to the report, the country’s deputy health minister, Tina Gifty Mensah, said the government would look into the accusations. “Obviously, it’s an act the constitution of Ghana frowns upon,” she said.
