Burkina Faso
Yet another atrocity in Burkina Faso. At least 50 people were killed in an attack by a group of heavily-armed men on a village in the north, according to a government spokesman. Authorities and security forces are struggling to get a handle on increasingly active armed groups with links to al-Qaeda and ISIS. The governments of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have been locked in a cross-border battle with the groups for about seven years but Burkina appears to have become the new hotspot.

Iran
Two men working in Iran’s aerospace industry have been “martyred,” according to state media. The use of the word martyred is likely code for Tehran pointing the finger at a foreign power, most likely Israel. There have been a string of mysterious deaths in recent months, including military figures and scientists linked to the country’s nuclear program. Israel does not publicly comment on the accusations.

Ecuador
Massive protests by indigenous groups have erupted in Ecuador over fuel costs, price caps on agricultural goods and other issues. At least 20 roadblocks were set up in 11 provinces across the country with demonstrators using burning tyres, trees, and mounds of earth to block off highways. "This is a show of strength until the government listens," 42-year-old protestor Manuel Cocha told the AFP news agency.
