Ethiopia’s parliament has voted to end a six-month state of emergency three months early. The emergency was declared in November of last year as Tigrayan rebels closed in on the capital Addis Ababa. The brother of Pakistani social media star Qandeel Baloch, who was brutally killed in a case that gripped the nation in 2016, has been acquitted of her murder. Muhammed Waseem confessed to the murder of his sister five years ago and said he did it because Qandeel brought shame on his family with the photos she posted on social media. He was sentenced to life in prison but later retracted his confession. Women’s rights campaigners in the country have reacted with fury to the decision to release him.
