African Union
Regular readers of Proximities will have read about each of them individually, but there has been a staggering wave of coups on the African continent in the past year. And, today, at an African Union summit underway in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, African leaders expressed alarm at the trend. The head of the AU's Peace and Security Council, Bankole Adeoye, said military governments would not be tolerated. Military coups have taken place in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Sudan and Chad.

Qatar-UAE
The leaders of Qatar and the UAE have met for the first time since several of Qatar’s neighbors imposed a blockade on the country in a row over Doha’s foreign policies. Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met on the sidelines of a lunch hosted by China’s President Xi Jinping at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt agreed in January to end the four-year dispute.

Senegal
Thousands of Senegalese have poured into the streets around the country to celebrate the country’s first win in the Africa Cup of Nations football tournament. The Teranga Lions beat seven-time champions Egypt 4-2 on penalties. Liverpool’s Sadio Mane scored the winning goal. There are some wonderful galleries of the celebrations.
