Afghanistan
Some of today’s developments from Afghanistan: Anti-Taliban protests have erupted in several cities, including Jalalabad and Asadabad. One of the men who fell from a US military evacuation plane after it took off from Kabul airport has been identified as Zaki Anwari, a footballer who had played for the national youth team. German news agency Deutsche Welle has said that Taliban fighters who had been “hunting” one of its journalists shot dead one member of his family and seriously wounded another.

Syria
Syrian government shelling of a village in the rebel-held Idlib province today killed at least five civilians, including four children, opposition activists said. The Idlib region is the country’s last rebel-held enclave and, according to the UN children’s agency, children are often killed by shelling there. The government of Bashar al-Assad has regained control of most of Syria with the help of Russian and Iranian forces.

Ethiopia
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today described humanitarian conditions in Ethiopia, where a brutal ten-month-old war grinds on, as “hellish.” As mentioned in many previous newsletters, the world remains largely indifferent.
