Afghanistan
As mentioned in yesterday’s Proximities, it is not only Ukrainians trying to cross into Poland. There are Ukraine residents from Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, India, Nepal and many other places. More reports have emerged today of Africans being held back and, in some cases, pushed off trains. Al Jazeera has published a piece in which it spoke to an Afghan man, who after fleeing the Taliban last year, is now forced to flee again with his wife and two young children.

North Korea
More tests in North Korea. This time Pyongyang said it had tested cameras designed for a spy satellite. It’s hard to know whether this is just the usual posturing or whether, as mentioned in yesterday’s newsletter, Kim Jong-un’s government is trying to upgrade its weapons capability while the world is focused on the war in Ukraine.

DR Congo
At least 20 people have been hacked to death with machetes in an attack on a village in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Locals said the Allied Democratic Forces, a Ugandan rebel group that fled into neighboring DRC in 2013, was behind the attack during which houses were also burned down. Eastern DRC has been beset by instability and conflict, with several groups operating there, for two decades.
