Afghanistan
So much for Taliban 2.0. Today, in the latest of a series of blows to any hopes for women’s rights in the country, Afghanistan’s rulers ordered women to cover their faces and wear head-to-toe clothing. Most women in Afghanistan wear headscarves but many, particularly in urban areas like the capital Kabul, do not cover their faces. The Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice said women’s fathers or closest male relatives would be held responsible if they did not cover their faces in public, and could be jailed if the new ruling was violated.

Demolishing the homes of Palestinian suspects and their families is a practise that Israel says it uses as a deterrent. The demolitions, though, are a tactic rights groups say amount to collective punishment - a war crime under the Geneva Conventions.
