Yemen
Two rights groups today accused both sides in Yemen’s grinding civil war of using starvation as a weapon. The Yemen-based Mwatana Organization for Human Rights and the Global Rights Compliance group pointed the finger at a Saudi Arabia-led coalition and its enemies the Houthis. The Saudis bombed farms, water infrastructure and fishing boats, the groups said. And the Houthis restricted humanitarian groups and laid mines on agricultural land. The war in Yemen has caused the world’s worst humanitarian crisis and about 130,000 people have been killed since it erupted in 2014.

Israel-Palestine
Israel has allowed construction materials into the Gaza strip after days of violent protests from Palestinians keen to rebuild after an Israeli bombardment in May. Israel had tightened its already restrictive blockade on the Palestinian enclave after the violence in May. Israeli rights group Gisha called the move “crucial but insufficient.”

Nigeria
On it goes. Gunmen in Nigeria today abducted about 70 highschool students from a school in the northwest of the country. Criminal gangs have in recent months stepped up a wave of kidnappings for ransom in the region. More than 1,000 children and students have been snatched since December. Most have been released after either ransoms were paid or after mediation efforts. Hundreds are still missing.
