Uganda
A big win for Ugandan security forces today. The leader of an ISIS-linked militia was captured after a shootout during which six of the group’s fighters were killed, according to the government. The Allied Democratic Forces is a Ugandan group that hides out in the deep bush of the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, emerging to launch regular hit-and-run attacks. The commander, known as “Njovu,” will be put on trial, the government said. The group last month claimed responsibility for killing a honeymooning couple from the UK and South Africa in a national park.

Myanmar
From a big win for Ugandan security forces to a big loss for those in Myanmar. The military today conceded it had lost control to rebels of one of the biggest and most significant towns on the country’s border with China. More than 25 percent of all trade between the neighbors goes through the town of Chinshwehaw. Myanmar’s military has struggled to contain a growing insurgency since it toppled a democratically-elected government in 2021 and threw its leaders in prison.

Israel-Palestine
Israeli forces have pushed deeper into Gaza as part of their ground offensive on the Palestinian enclave but they appear to be facing fierce resistance. Brigadier General Iddo Mizrahi, chief of Israel's military engineers, said troops were encountering mines and booby traps. Hamas and Islamic Jihad were also emerging from tunnels to fire on tanks before quickly retreating back into the underground network, according to videos from the groups and witness reports from Gaza residents. The death toll in Gaza today passed 9,000, its health ministry said.
