Uganda
Uganda has launched air and artillery raids against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) armed group, which is based in deep bush in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The operation, launched in coordination with the DRC government, followed twin suicide attacks in Uganda’s capital Kampala earlier this month in which seven people were killed and dozens wounded. ISIS claimed responsibility for that attack, which authorities believe was carried out by the ADF. The groups formed an alliance in 2019 and, since then, ADF activity has surged both in eastern DRC and Uganda, but particularly in recent months.

Brazil
Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro has joined the centrist Liberal Party ahead of a reelection bid next year. Bolsonaro fell out with his former party, the Social Liberal Party, in 2019 and has been without a party since. Under Brazilian law, the 66-year-old would be unable to run without representing a party. The president’s popularity has slipped to all-time lows due to his handling of the coronavirus and accusations of corruption. He is expected to face a stiff challenge from leftist former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has a healthy lead in opinion polls.

Sudan
Far from the international headlines, fierce protests against last month’s military coup in Sudan continue. Security forces today fired teargas and chased down demonstrators as tens of thousands rallied near the presidential palace in the capital Khartoum. Protests also took place in the cities of Port Sudan, Kassala, Nyala and Atbara.
