Turkey
Angry crowds have attacked homes and businesses belonging to Syrian refugees in Turkey’s capital Ankara after a Syrian refugee killed a Turkish national in a streetfight. Hundreds of people were involved in the rampage that went on for hours before eventually being stopped by police. There are fears of rising social tensions as Turkish nationalist groups protest the presence of refugees and that fear has been heightened by the more recent arrival of people from Afghanistan. Turkey has won praise for taking in more than 4 million refugees from neighboring Syria.

Sudan
Stunning news out of Sudan as its government agrees to cooperate with the International Criminal Court on prosecuting former president Omar al-Bashir for war crimes allegedly committed during the conflict in the country’s Darfur region. The government will decide later whether to physically hand Bashir over to the ICC to face trial in the Hague. Bashir ruled Sudan for 30 years before being ousted in 2019.
