Tunisia
Thousands of Tunisians took to the streets of the capital Tunis today to protest the seizure of executive power by President Kais Saied and call for a return to democracy. Saied in July sacked the prime minister and suspended parliament, citing corruption and mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic, in a move his opponents described as a coup. Still, other Tunisians, fed up after years of sky-high unemployment and political crisis, supported him. A heavy police presence watched over the demonstrations.

Israel-Palestine
Israeli security forces today arrested the final two of six Palestinian men who had embarrassed the government by tunnelling out of one of Israel’s most secure jails, appearing to lay bare serious flaws in the prison system. The men were declared heros by Palestinians, the tunnel they dug with a spoon dubbed “the tunnel of freedom.”

Guinea
Guinea’s military leaders, who seized power in a coup earlier this month, have said they will not allow deposed president Alpha Conde to leave the country and go into exile, resisting pressure from neighboring nations who are pushing for his release.
