Tunisia
Forty-three people trying to reach Europe died today when their boat sank in the Mediterranean. The boat, which set sail from Libya and sank off the coast of Tunisia, was carrying people from Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea and Bangladesh, according to the Red Crescent. The number of people trying to reach Europe from the shores of north Africa goes up every summer with the calmer seas. Since 2014, more than 20,000 people have died on the Mediterranean while trying to reach European shores.

Brazil
Thousands of people in Brazil have taken to the streets to protest President Jair Bolsonaro’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and demand his impeachment. The supreme court has ordered an investigation into Bolsonaro’s response to allegations of corruption around the procurement of vaccines. More than 500,000 Brazilians have died from COVID-19 - the second-highest number in the world after the US.

Ethiopia
The warnings on Ethiopia only get bleaker by the day. The UN on Saturday said more than 400,000 people in the conflict-ridden Tigray region are facing the worst famine the world will have seen for decades and that 1.8 million more are on the brink.
