It rarely makes international headlines anymore but people are still drowning in the Mediterranean Sea. The Italian coastguard today said that 21 people died off the coast of Tunisia as they tried reach the Italian island of Lampedusa.

An Islamic State West Africa Province attack on a military base in northern Nigeria has sent 65,000 people fleeing from their homes into neigbouring Niger, AFP reports.

Those words from a judge will chill activists in Hong Kong. The judge was speaking after sentencing tycoon and activist Jimmy Lai to 14 months in prison for his part in pro-democracy protests. Lai, though high profile, is just the latest in a long line of pro-democracy activists sent to prison as China clamps down on dissent in the special administrative region.
