Tanzania
At least 19 people were killed today when a small passenger plane plunged into Lake Victoria in Tanzania, according to the country’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa. “All Tanzanians join you in mourning these 19 people … who have lost their lives,” Majaliwa said. Local reports said that the flight - en route from the commercial capital Dar es Salaam to the northwestern city of Bukoba - might have got into difficulties due to stormy weather. Twenty-six people were pulled from the waters, according to police, who said it was possible two rescuers had also died.

Jailed British-Egyptian dissident Alaa Abdel el-Fattah, who is currently on full hunger strike, may have only days to live, according to rights group Amnesty International. El-Fattah’s family have been campaigning for his release in the run-up to Egypt hosting scores of world leaders in the resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh as it stages the COP27 climate conference this week. Amnesty’s Secretary General Agnes Callamard said Egypt may have no more than 72 hours to save his life. El-Fattah comes from a family of human rights activists and rose to prominence during the Arab uprisings of 2011.
