Sudan
Tens of thousands of people poured into the streets across Sudan today, in the biggest protests yet against this week’s military coup. Soldiers fired on demonstrators, killing at least three people and wounding more than 100, according to medics. Demonstrations have been held daily since General Abdel Fattah Burhan led the coup against a transitional government made up of civilians and military leaders, which had been in place since longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir was overthrown in 2019. But nothing on the scale of today’s demonstrations had taken place. Protest organizers will be hoping they can build on the momentum and force Burhan into a corner.

The UN last week said it feared mass atrocities were imminent as thousands of troops began to mass in the northwest.

Afghanistan-Greece
The Greek coastguard has towed a small ship crammed with about 400 mostly Afghan refugees to “a safe anchorage” off the island of Kos, it said today. Greece has asked Turkey, where the ship is reported to have set sail from, to take it and the refugees back. EU countries are worried about an increase in refugees coming from Afghanistan since the Taliban took power, and have a deal with Turkey that it take back people who have crossed into the EU from its territory if they are refused asylum.
