Sudan
He has been called the world’s most wanted people smuggler. But today Kidane Zekarias Habtemariam was arrested in Sudan after an international manhunt, according to Interpol. An Eritrean, Kidane is accused of running a camp in Libya in which mostly East African people were allegedly held against their will, raped and extorted. He had a reputation for “particularly cruel and violent treatment of migrants,” Interpol said. Stephen Kavanagh, a director at Interpol, thanked Ethiopia, the Netherlands, the UAE and Sudan for playing a “crucial role” in the arrest.

Mexico
Violence has erupted in the Mexican city of Culiacán, with burning buses being used to block roads, after the son of the notorious Mexican drug lord "El Chapo" was arrested. Ovidio Guzmán-López was captured after six months of surveillance, authorities said, in an operation that had the backing of the US. His father, Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, has been serving a life sentence in the US since 2019. Guzmán-López is believed to run a faction of his father’s Sinaloa cartel, one of the biggest criminal gangs in the world. US President Joe Biden is set to visit Mexico next week.

Uganda
Some good news out of Uganda. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the continent’s top public health body, said today that the country appeared to have gotten its Ebola outbreak under control and that it had been 39 days since a new infection was reported. The Africa CDC’s acting director, Ahmed Ogwell Ouma, said that if no new cases were reported by January 10, the outbreak would be officially declared over. Uganda is particularly experienced at containing Ebola but this outbreak of the Sudan strain, for which there is no vaccine, had proven persistent.
