Sudan
At least twenty people, including two children, have been killed by an army air raid in Sudan’s capital Khartoum, local activists said. The military was attacking territory held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia against which it has been fighting a war since April. The RSF controls several neighborhoods in Khartoum and has proven hard to dislodge despite the army pummelling its positions with air raids and artillery strikes. Around 5,000 people have been killed since the conflict erupted, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data project, but that is likely to be a conservative estimate. Some 2.8 million people have fled their homes in the capital.

Two female Iranian journalists, Negin Bagheri and Elnaz Mohammadi, have been jailed for a month as part of a three-year partly suspended sentence on charges of “conspiracy” and “collusion.” Their lawyer told the Ham Mihan newspaper, where Mohammadi works, that they would be required to undergo “professional ethics training” and that they are banned from leaving the country. Local reports did not detail the allegations against them. Mohammadi's sister, Elahe, who also works for Ham Mihan, has been in prison since September 2022 for her reporting on the funeral of Mahsa Amini, whose death in police custody sparked massive protests last year.
