Sudan
The military coup in Sudan has slipped from the international headlines since the army seized power on October 25th. But people have not stopped protesting and today at least 14 were shot dead and dozens wounded, medics said, as thousands demonstrated against the coup leaders. A pro-democracy doctors’ union said most of the dead had gunshot wounds to “the head, neck or torso.” The military, as it has done after every incident in which protesters were killed, denied using live ammunition.

India
As mentioned in a recent newsletter, authorities in India’s capital New Delhi had planned a week-long lockdown of schools to protect children from soaring pollution levels. The schools closed today but the city’s government decided to shutter them indefinitely such is the severity of the problem. The New Delhi state government is now weighing an unprecedented step: locking down the entire city of more than 20 million people to reduce the pollution levels. It would face huge pushback if it took such a step with many experts warning it would prove a lethal blow to livelihoods.

Israel-Palestine
Qatar and Egypt agreed today to provide hundreds of millions of dollars worth of building materials and fuel to the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip. The Palestinian enclave has a mammoth reconstruction task on its hands after an 11-day bombardment by Israel last May. About 2,200 homes were destroyed during the conflict and 37,000 damaged, according to officials and tallies by media organisations.
