Sudan
Sudan’s military coup leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, today said he was forced into toppling a transitional government in order to prevent a civil war. Al-Burhan, speaking at his first news conference since he seized power on Monday, said civilian leaders were inciting people against the army. A transitional administration had been in place since 2019, when autocrat Omar al-Bashir was overthrown after huge street protests. Al-Burhan said he would form a new government and stick to a planned transition to democratic elections in 2023. Protesters, though, have pledged to take to the streets, seeing the coup as a naked power grab. Western nations have roundly condemned the military, the Arab League has called for the transitional government to be reinstated, and the US suspended $700m in emergency assistance.
