Sudan
Using fire as a weapon of war. That was the accusation levelled today against combatants in Sudan’s grinding civil war by a UK-based rights group. Investigators from Sudan Witness, an open-source project run by the nonprofit Center for Information Resilience, said fire destroyed or damaged 72 villages and settlements just last month. In the course of the war, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) group has often set entire villages ablaze. The conflict has killed at least 14,000 people, according to the UN, though that is likely a significant underestimate. It has forced a staggering 8.5 million from their homes.

Afghanistan
Rescue workers and locals are still searching for survivors of flash flooding that killed at least 300 people in Afghanistan’s Baghlan province. With rescuers struggling to reach some areas, the Taliban government and the UN’s World Health Organization warned the death toll could rise significantly. Israeli forces are pushing deep into both Gaza’s north and south, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee. Some of the most intense fighting for weeks raged in both areas, according to a report from Reuters news agency. A crucial crossing point for aid on the border between Rafah and Egypt remains closed by the Israeli military, with humanitarian groups saying it is making a dire situation worse.
