The death toll from more than two weeks of rioting in South Africa has risen to more than 300. Violent protests erupted a day after former president Jacob Zuma was jailed for failing to cooperate with an investigation into corruption during his time in office. The riots have been described as the worst violence to hit the country since apartheid.

Syria
It’s been pointed out in previous newsletters that, though it grinds on, Syria’s 10-year-old war rarely makes headlines anymore. According to opposition activists, seven members of the same family, including four children, were today killed by government shelling of the Idlib region, the country’s last rebel-held enclave. The UN children’s agency UNICEF says at least 17 children have been killed in Idlib this month alone.

Ethiopia
