Protests are spreading in South Africa after the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma for failing to cooperate with an investigation into corruption during his time in power. Pro-Zuma protesters took to the streets when the former president handed himself in on Wednesday and, with looting breaking out in several cities, police say criminals are now taking advantage of the chaos. Zuma’s imprisonment has been hailed by rights groups who see it as an important public sign that nobody is above the law.

The widow of assassinated Haitian president Jovenel Moïse has spoken publicly for the first time since she was wounded in the attack that killed her husband. "In the blink of an eye, the mercenaries entered my house and riddled my husband with bullets," she said in a voice recording posted on her Twitter account, adding that the attack happened so quickly her husband was unable to utter a word.
