Somalia
At least four people were killed and 10 wounded in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu today when a suicide bomber walked into a tea shop and detonated his explosive vest. The attack was the latest in a spate by the rebels this month. The tea shop was near a Turkish military base in which Somali troops are trained, and Shabab claimed it was targeting soldiers who socialize there. The armed group, which has been battling the country’s government for more than a decade, was largely pushed from the capital in 2011 by African Union peacekeepers but still controls swathes of rural territory.

Nigeria
Nigeria’s interior minister, Rauf Aregbesola, has issued a shoot-to-kill order to prison officers as the country grapples with an unprecedented number of jailbreaks. Armed criminal gangs are attacking prisons to free detainees, and a startling 5,000 prisoners have escaped so far this year. “Any effort to breach our facility is not acceptable. Don't shoot to injure, shoot to kill. Don't shoot to disable, shoot to kill," Aregbesola said.

Hong Kong
Authorities in Hong Kong are to cull 2,000 hamsters and other small animals after a Covid outbreak in a pet store was found to have infected several animals. People who bought hamsters from the store are being asked to bring them in to be euthanized. Authorities say the outbreak may be a rare case of the virus being passed from animals to human. While Covid can be caught by animals, though, there is no clear evidence that it can be easily transmitted from animals to humans. More than 14,000 people have signed a petition calling on the government to stop the cull.
