Rwanda
Paul Rusesabagina, portrayed as a lifesaver during Rwanda’s 1994 genocide in the acclaimed film ‘Hotel Rwanda’, was today sentenced to 25 years in prison on terrorism charges. Rusesabagina, a longtime critic of the government, was accused of being behind a rebel group that launched attacks in 2018 and 2019. Rights groups and supporters called his trial a sham. The former hotel manager is said to have saved the lives of more than 1,000 people during the genocide that killed more than 800,000.

Russia
A gunman today killed six people and wounded almost 30 others in a shooting spree at a university in the Russian city of Perm. The attacker, reported to be a student at the college, was shot during a gun battle with police and then arrested. Dramatic footage on social media appeared to show students and teachers jumping from windows to escape. While such incidents are rare in Russia, it was the second this year.

South Africa
A tragic story out of South Africa. A swarm of bees has killed 63 endangered penguins on the world famous Boulders beach. Bird conservationists said the penguins and bees usually coexist with no issues and speculated that the penguins may have accidentally disturbed a beehive. Locals have now been asked to stop keeping hives.
