Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has announced he is to run for vice president in the country’s elections next year. Duterte is barred from running for a second term under the constitution and critics say he’s trying to cling to power by backseat driving whoever ends up president. Duterte, hugely popular, came to power on a pledge to launch a “war on drugs”. Thousands of people have been killed in the crackdown and rights groups accuse him of sanctioning extra-judicial executions.

Morocco
Moroccans go to the polls today in parliamentary and local elections that have failed to capture the imagination. Morocco is a constitutional monarchy where the king holds sway and, despite promises of reform during the Arab Spring, few changes have materialized. Turnout could be as low as 35 percent, according to analysts.

Guinea’s military coup leaders today released scores of political prisoners jailed by the previous government in a move some say is aimed at currying favor with the opposition and with Guineans who opposed toppled president Alpha Conde.
