Pakistan
At least eight teachers have been shot dead in northwest Pakistan. Six of the teachers were killed when gunmen stormed a school in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and an eighth, who taught in the same school, was killed on the street earlier in the day. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks but they took place in a part of Pakistan that has experienced violence between Sunni and Shia tribes. A local Taliban group has in the past attacked members of the Shia community, and six of the seven teachers were Shia, according to local reports. Abid Hussaini, a local police official, told Al Jazeera that police were still working on establishing a motive.

Heavy shelling got in the way of another effort to get aid to people in desperate need as fighting between government forces and a powerful paramilitary group nears its third week. Griffiths said it was hard to get around the "the rigid existential fact that those at war are keen to keep it going."
