Nigeria
At least 76 people have been killed after a boat capsized in southeastern Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari said in a statement on Twitter. The boat was overloaded with passengers - many of them reported to be women and children - who were fleeing flooding in the state of Anambra. Locals said the flooding had destroyed the one major road connecting eight isolated communities to the rest of the area and boats were the only way out. Nigeria is battling its worst floods in a decade. Homes, crops and roads have been swept away and more than 300 people have been killed.

The Revolution For Prosperity party was set up just seven months ago by mining magnate and political novice Sam Matekane. Matekane’s party, though, just missed out on an outright majority and must now form a coalition government. The result is being seen as a sign that a new generation was eager for change amid corruption, unemployment and rampant crime. Matekane has become known for several major philanthropic projects in recent years, including funding the educations of children in rural areas.
