More than 400 prisoners are still missing after nearly 900 inmates were broken out of a jail in a daring attack in Nigeria’s capital Abuja. Officials blamed the attack on the Boko Haram armed group and President Muhammadu Buhari said he was “disappointed” with the country’s intelligence services for failing to prevent it. A staggering 5,000 people have escaped from jails in Nigeria since 2020.

Libya
Twenty-two Malian people, including three children, have been found dead on a boat off the coast of Libya, according to the UN and Mali’s government. The dead were part of a group of 83 people who had been stuck on a stricken vessel since June 22, the Ministry of Malians Abroad said in a statement. Survivors said they had died from drowning and dehydration. Libya has become the main transit point for people fleeing countries in Africa and the Middle East looking for a better life in Europe.

South Africa
A state funeral has been held in South Africa for 21 youngsters, aged from 13 - 20, who were found dead in a bar where people had been celebrating the end of exams. President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the eulogy and said that those found culpable would be swiftly prosecuted. The bodies had no signs of injury and authorities are still awaiting the results of toxicology reports. Several witnesses have said security guards sprayed a chemical substance into the venue in an attempt to force people to leave after it became overcrowded. The case has caused outrage across South Africa.
