The kidnapping crisis in northwestern Nigeria has been mentioned in many previous newsletters. More than 1,000 schoolchildren and students have been kidnapped for ransom by criminal gangs since December last year, perhaps 200 remain missing, and it doesn’t get enough coverage. Today, a positive development: The remaining children from a group of more than 100 who were kidnapped in June were freed.

Haiti
The US today pledged another $32 million in aid to Haiti, where a massive earthquake struck earlier this month killing at least 2,200 people. Hundreds of thousands of people have been made homeless and aid efforts have been hampered by insecurity.

Kenya’s capital Nairobi is notorious for its snaking traffic jams but things were taken to a ridiculous degree this week with some commuters reporting that they reached home in the late early hours, not long before they had to leave for work again.
