Namibia
Hundreds of Namibians protested outside parliament today where lawmakers were debating an agreement made with Germany in which the former colonial power acknowledged it had committed genocide in the country. The accord, agreed in May, included a package of about one billion euro from Berlin to fund projects that will primarily benefit the descendants of the victims. Protestors say the deal is insufficient, that Germany needs to issue a formal apology and that further reparations should be paid. Historians say German settlers killed about 100,000 people between 1904 and 1908, driving many into the desert where they died of thirst.

Libya
A blow to UN-backed peace efforts in Libya today as one of two rival governments passed a no-confidence motion in a unity government that had been in place since February with a mandate to run the country until elections in December. Libya has been beset by conflict and chaos since Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011.

Afghanistan
The Taliban has formally asked the UN that it be allowed to represent Afghanistan and address this week’s UN General Assembly. A UN credentials committee will now have to deliberate on who has the right to represent the country at the world body.
